Freezing Chains

Freezing Chains Introduction

Hello, reader. I am Minoru Otoshiro and this is my second article for Serpentcards. This time, I’ll be talking to you about the newest Structure Deck in the TCG: Freezing Chains.

It’s not often that Konami releases cards in consideration of what the fanbase wants. One of those instances was in the form of a Structure Deck “Theme” Poll Plan last year. The winner of that poll was the “Ice Barrier” archetype.

Just like with every Structure Deck, there are new cards, and Freezing Chains is no exception. I’ll go into the details of all the newest “Ice Barrier cards”, their effects and a few combos. First off, is Spells!

Freezing Chains Break-down

Winds over the Ice Barrier

Tribute any number of “Ice Barrier” monsters; Special Summon from your Deck that many Level 4 or lower “Ice Barrier” monsters with different names from each other. During your Main Phase, except the turn this card was sent to the GY: You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 of your “Ice Barrier” monsters that is banished or in your GY; add it to your hand. You can only use each effect of “Winds Over the Ice Barrier” once per turn.

A mediocre card. It helps bring back Level 4 or lower “Ice Barriers” at the expense of “Ice Barrier” monsters on the field. It doesn’t help much in improving field presence, which is one of the downsides of the “Ice  Barrier” archetype as a whole.

Its 2nd effect is not bad. It will help to bring back “Revealer of the Ice Barrier” to your hand, which I’ll explain later on. But as far as “Ice Barrier” Spells are concerned, I’ll get onto something better:

Freezing Chains of the Ice Barrier

When this card is activated: You can target 1 Level 4 or lower “Ice Barrier” monster in your GY; Special Summon it. While you control 3 or more “Ice Barrier” monsters, “Ice Barrier” monsters you control are unaffected by the activated effects of your opponent’s monsters that were Special Summoned from the Extra Deck. You can only activate 1 “Freezing Chains of the Ice Barrier” per turn.

This is the card which the Freezing Chains Structure Deck is named after – and it’s pretty good! It helps improve field presence.

One of the other downsides of the “Ice Barrier” archetype is that it loses out on hand advantage. In order to activate the effects of some of the monster effects, discarding cards from the hand is required. However, this card allows you to Special Summon the same cards that you discarded in order to activate an “Ice Barrier” monster effect!

Well, provided that you’ve discarded a Level 4 or lower “Ice Barrier” Monster, that is…

One combo that you can use this card with is “Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier”. Its effect can return any number of cards you control to your hand, to get a 500 ATK boost per card. So if you use its effect to return “Freezing Chains” from your field back your hand, you can activate it again, allowing you to Special Summon another Level 4 or lower “Ice Barrier” monster!

The 2nd effect gives your “Ice Barrier” monsters passive protection from your opponent’s Extra Deck monsters activated effects. So make sure you have at least 3 “Ice Barrier” monsters on the field.

That’s it for Spells. The next card is a Trap – and interestingly enough, it’s an “Ice Barrier” support card which is not an “Ice Barrier” card!!!

Terror of Trishula

Apply these effects, in sequence, depending on the number of “Ice Barrier” Synchro Monsters you control with different names;

  • 1+: Banish 1 card your opponent controls.
  • 2+: Banish 1 card from your opponent’s GY.
  • 3+: Banish 1 random card from your opponent’s hand.

When your opponent activates a card or effect that targets an “Ice Barrier” Synchro Monster(s) you control: You can banish this card from your GY; negate that effect.

You can only use each effect of “Terror of Trishula” once per turn.

This card is “Trishula: Trap Version”! Well, in order to replicate Trishula’s effect, you must have at least 3 “Ice Barrier” Synchro monsters on the field. The new support will definitely facilitate that, not to mention Master Rule 5, which allows you to Synchro Summon without a Link Monster. Unfortunately, it does not have “Ice Barrier” in its name, so it’s not searchable by other “Ice Barrier” cards.

That’s it for Traps (or rather, Trap). Moving onto Monsters!

Zuijin of the Ice Barrier

Type: Warrior

Attribute: WATER

Level: 2

You can Tribute this card; Special Summon 1 Level 5 or higher “Ice Barrier” monster from your hand. If this card is in your GY, except the turn it was sent there: You can target 1 Level 3 or higher WATER monster you control; reduce its Level by exactly 2, and if you do, Special Summon this card but banish it when it leaves the field. You can only use each effect of “Zuijin of the Ice Barrier” once per turn.

A good card. Not only is it searchable by “Medallion of the Ice Barrier”, but also by “Reinforcement of the Army”. I suggest Tributing it to Special Summon, “General Grunard of the Ice Barrier”, because it’ll allow you to Normal Summon one “Ice Barrier” monster per turn – and that helps with building field presence.

For better or worse, this card’s Special Summon effect (from the Graveyard) requires reducing one of your WATER monster’s Level by 2. It can either help or get in the way of Synchro Summoning the more powerful “Ice Barrier” monsters. But do note, it says “Level 3 or higher WATER Monster.” Any WATER attribute monster. It doesn’t have to be an “Ice Barrier” Monster.

It would have been great if the 1st effect allows Special Summoning from the Deck, though. But that’s exactly what the next card does!

Revealer of the Ice Barrier

Type: Spellcaster

Attribute: WATER

Level: 4

While you control another “Ice Barrier” monster, your opponent cannot Tribute Summon. You can only use each of the following effects of “Revealer of the Ice Barrier” once per turn. You can discard 1 card; Special Summon 1 “Ice Barrier” Tuner from your Deck, also you cannot Special Summon monsters for the rest of this turn, except WATER monsters. If you would discard, or send a card(s) from your hand to the GY, to activate an “Ice Barrier” monster’s effect, you can banish this card from your GY instead of 1 of those cards.

The 1st effect isn’t amazing, considering how Tribute Summoning isn’t a thing nowadays. But that’s not all! Its 2nd effect helps set up the field for Synchro Summoning. One of the Tuners which can be Special Summoned by its effect is “Hexa Spirit of the Ice Barrier”, while I’ll go into detail next.

The 3rd effect is helpful, especially considering how some of the “Ice Barrier” monsters require discarding cards from the hand in order to activate their effects. This card can spare you from doing that by banishing itself from the Graveyard. An important effect, especially if you have cards in your hand which you would rather not discard.

Not to mention, even after this card is banished by its own effect, it can be brought back to your hand with the Graveyard effect of “Winds over the Ice Barrier”, which I discussing earlier.

Most of the good “Ice Barrier” Monsters are Level 5 or higher. Considering how this card is Level 4 (and doesn’t requires Tributing monsters), this is a very good addition to the “Ice Barrier” archetype.

Type:  Sea Serpent

Level: 1

While you control another “Ice Barrier” monster, monsters your opponent controls lose 500 ATK/DEF. During your Main Phase: You can send 1 Level 3 or lower “Ice Barrier” monster from your Deck to the GY, and if you do, this card’s Level becomes the same as that monster’s, until the end of this turn. You can only use this effect of “Hexa Spirit of the Ice Barrier” once per turn.

A rather flexible Tuner. It can be Special Summoned by way of “One for One”, and can change its Level to either 2 or 3. Not to mention, this effect does not require discarding a card from your hand.

If you combo this card’s effect with “Freezing Chains of the Ice Barrier”, you can Special Summon the same “Ice Barrier’ Monster which you dumped from the Deck!

Speaker for the Ice Barrier

Type:  Spellcaster

Attribute: WATER

Level: 4

While you control another “Ice Barrier” monster, Defense Position monsters your opponent controls cannot change their battle positions. You can only use each of the following effects of “Speaker for the Ice Barriers” once per turn. If you control an “Ice Barrier” monster: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. If you control an “Ice Barrier” monster: You can banish this card from your GY; Special Summon 1 “Ice Barrier Token” (Aqua/WATER/Level 1/ATK 0/DEF 0).

The 1st effect isn’t great, considering how Link Monsters are a thing, and cannot be in Defense Position in the first place. However, this is an arguably superior version of “Prior of the Ice Barrier”, because it not only Special Summons itself if you already control an “Ice Barrier” monster, but it doesn’t have the restriction that prevents you from summoning Level 5 or higher monsters on the turn that it’s Special Summoned. That’s important because the more powerful “Ice Barrier” Synchro Monsters are Level 5 and higher.

Not to mention, its Graveyard effect helps to improve field presence. But needless to say, that requires an “Ice Barrier” on your side of the field. And unlike “Prior”, each of this card’s effects can only be used once per turn.

General Wayne of the Ice Barrier

Type: Warrior

Attribute: WATER

Level: 5

Spells and Traps sent from the field to your opponent’s GY are banished instead. You can only use each of the following effects of “General Wayne of the Ice Barrier” once per turn. If your opponent controls a monster and you control an “Ice Barrier” monster: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. If this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can add 1 “Ice Barrier” Spell/Trap from your Deck to your hand.

Even though the 1st effect isn’t as good as Masked Hero Dark Law, banishing your opponent’s Spells and Traps can be helpful, especially if they have effects that activate in the Graveyard. This card prevents the opponent from activating such Spell/Trap effects.

It’s too bad that you cannot search for “Terror of Trishula” with this card (upon Normal/Special Summoning this card). However, you can add “Medallion of the Ice Barrier”, which allows you to search for another “Ice Barrier” monster. So yeah, this is a card which searches for a card, which searches for a card!

That’s it for Monsters – in the Main Deck. Because in the Extra Deck, is the new Ace Monster of the “Ice Barrier” archetype:

Trishula, Zero Dragon of the Ice Barrier

TrishulaZeroDragonoftheIceBarrier CA

Type: Dragon

Attribute: WATER

Level: 11

 1 Tuner + 2+ non-Tuner monsters

When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can banish up to 3 cards your opponent controls. If this Synchro Summoned card in its owner’s control is destroyed by an opponent’s card: You can Special Summon 1 “Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier” from your Extra Deck or GY, its ATK becomes 3300, then halve the ATK of any face-up monsters your opponent currently controls, also negate their effects. You can only use this effect of “Trishula, Zero Dragon of the Ice Barrier” once per turn.

The card effects say it all. It will definitely give the OG Trishula a run for its money! NON-TARGETING Banishment of up to 3 of your opponent’s cards on their field. Need I say more?

Oh wait, I will!

If your opponent dares to destroy this card, that’s just adding cold water over the burned area (get it?!) Because that’s only going to allow you to Special Summon:

TrishulaDragonoftheIceBarrier BLLR EN ScR 1E

from your Extra Deck or Graveyard – buffed up to 3300 ATK.

Do note, however, Special Summoning this card does not allow you to activate its effect – because that requires properly Synchro Summoning it. But why complain? All your opponent’s Face-Up monsters will have their ATK halved and effects negated. It’ll definitely send chills down your opponent’s spine!

Freezing Chains Conclusion

While the new support definitely helps improve consistency, the “Ice Barrier” archetype, as a whole, needs as many “Ice Barriers” on the field as possible, especially as Synchro Material. Even the new support has its restrictions, so adding tech cards such as Surface and Salvage will be required.

This deck still runs the risk of hand traps, which may prevent this deck from even attempting to build field presence – and if that happens, it’s Game Over for “Ice Barriers.”

Even though “Trishula Zero” is a big threat to the opponent if it hits the field, its game-breaking effects go off only when it’s destroyed.  There are ways to get over it without destroying it, such as by banishing it, shuffling it back to the Extra Deck, etc.

On the plus side, it should be noted that the searcher “Medallion of the Ice Barrier” searches for any Ice Barrier monster, regardless of its Level. Not to mention, it’s NOT a Once-Per-Turn effect. To top that, it’s Unlimited in the Forbidden and Limited Card List. (as of now)

It’s unlikely that the new support will allow “Ice Barriers” to make a great impact on the meta – if anything, “Trishula Zero”, with its flexible Summoning requirements. will definitely have a place in decks which Synchro Summon.

Are you an “Ice-Barrier” duelist waiting for the new support? Are you a duelist wanting to get into the “Ice Barrier” archetype? Or are you looking for ways to counter “Ice Barriers”? Either way, turn up your heaters and put on your coats because Structure Deck – Freezing Chains is heading to stores on 18th February 2021 in Europe and Oceania (and in the USA the next day.)

Thanks for reading. Until next time!
