Joey Wheeler Duelist Kingdom Deck

In the first of our Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime Deck series, we’ll be going through every character from the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and doing our best to compile the best 40-card deck from the cards the characters used in the series.

Joey Wheeler Deck Profile

Joey Wheeler is one of the participants in the Duelist Kingdom tournament and serves as one of the main characters in the series. Joey enters the tournament in order to try and win the tournament’s prize money for his sister, Serenity, who needs the money for her eye operation. At this point, Joey is very new to Duel Monsters and its rules, and even admits in one episode that he wished “Gramps” (Yugi’s Grandfather) had trained with him more before he entered such a big event.

Joey’s deck in Duelist Kingdom is heavily monster-focused, comprised mostly of vanilla beast/warrior type monsters, and his ace cards “Red-Eyes Black Dragon” (won from Rex Raptor) and “Time Wizard” (given to him by Yugi). In the beginning of the tournament, Joey struggled to adapt to the rules and Yugi often has to give Joey advice in the duels, especially in his first duel against Mai Valentine. Despite the odds, as the tournament goes on, Joey becomes more confident after every win and eventually makes it to the top 4 of the tournament, before being defeated by his best-friend Yugi Muto in the semi finals

A few things to note:

We will only be using cards a character used or had in their deck in the anime for our series, and the yugioh fandom site to cross-check the cards used.

We will do everything we can to avoid adding duplicates of cards a character used, unless they used multiple copies of course.

We aim to strike a fine balance between monsters, spell and traps, so we will aim for 20 monsters, 10 spells and 10 traps, if it can be achieved.

Where a character has less than 40 cards, we will then use multiple copies of cards they used, always trying to keep a balanced card ratio in their deck.

Certain cards in our decks have anime exclusive effects (anime cards) which differ from the TCG.  All anime exclusive cards will have “anime” next to their name in the card list below. (For example, in the anime, Thousand Dragon was played as a main deck monster, which we are using today, but in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, it’s treated as a fusion monster)

So with that out of the way, lets get started! Today, we’re taking a look at the deck Joey Wheeler used specifically in the Duelist Kingdom Series.

Hello, thanks for checking out my profile! I've been a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! since the age of 14 when I first watched the anime series on Netflix and immediately was hooked on the duels, the characters and the storylines from the first series. Content-wise, most of my written work tends to be "Yu-Gi-Oh!" anime focused, with also some content, now and again, on the various Yu-Gi-Oh! video games which I play from time to time.
